4 September 2026

MEDIA RELEASE

34 youths set to represent Singapore at the world’s largest skills competition

Singapore will field a team of 34 youths from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and the five polytechnics to compete in a record 31 skill areas at the upcoming WorldSkills Competition (WSC) in Shanghai, China, from 22 to 27 September 2026.

This marks Singapore’s largest-ever showing at the WSC in terms of the number of skill areas, since it first took part in 1995. The team will also compete in three of the new skill areas introduced at this year’s competition – (1) Rail Vehicle Technology, (2) Software Testing, and (3) Unmanned Aerial Systems.

The 48th WSC will feature 64 skill areas, the largest number to date. It is expected to bring together more than 1,400 competitors from over 70 countries and regions.

The list of Team Singapore competitors and a summary of Singapore’s participation in past WSCs can be found in Annexes A and B respectively.

A Send-Off Ceremony for Team Singapore was held today at Temasek Polytechnic, with Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, as the Guest-of-Honour. At the ceremony, Dr Janil presented the Singapore flag to the Team Captains – Ms Tan Jie Ying (ICT Network Infrastructure) and Ms Sheryl Ong (Visual Merchandising) – as a symbolic show of support for the competitors representing Singapore in Shanghai.

Mr Peter Lam, Chairman of the WorldSkills Singapore Council and Chief Executive Officer of ITE, said: “Our competitors have worked hard to prepare for this competition, and their dedication is commendable. As Singapore takes part in a record number of skill areas this year, we look forward to seeing them showcase their skills on the global stage. The WorldSkills Competition will be an invaluable experience for them to challenge themselves, benchmark their skills against the best in the world, and learn from their international peers. Beyond skills, the experience will also help them build perseverance and resilience, which will serve them well in their future endeavours. We are proud of how far every competitor has come and wish them every success in Shanghai.”

Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of National Development, will be joining the Singapore contingent in Shanghai to support the competitors and attend the WorldSkills Competition.
