Information on 44th WorldSkills Competition

Organised by WorldSkills International, the WorldSkills Competition (WSC) (https://www.worldskills.org/what/competitions/worldskills-competitions/) is the largest biennial vocational education and skills excellence event in the world. First introduced as a national skills competition in Madrid, Spain, in 1947, the WSC has become a flagship international competition hosted by different cities since 1950. It symbolises the pinnacle of excellence in skilled trades and technologies training.

The competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skills competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace.

Since Singapore’s debut at the WSC in 1995, Team Singapore has done well over the years. The Team triumphed with one Silver Medal, Two Bronze Medals and 14 Medallions for Excellence in the 43rd WSC in São Paulo, Brazil. Overall, Team Singapore clinched a record number of Medals and Medallions, in 17 out of the 20 skills areas it participated in. A total of 1,189 competitors from 59 countries and regions competed in the 43rd WSC.

The 44th WSC will be held from 14 to 19 October 2017, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Singapore will be fielding a team of 21 young men and women from ITE, Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic, to compete in 19 skill areas.
